WHS Training & Gap Analysis

Legally, staff must be trained and competent to perform their jobs. As a rule, the amount and level of training should be directly proportional to the safety risk involved with the job. For example, the operation of a personal computer (PC) is usually quite safe, therefore training could be minimal.

Conversely, the operation of machinery can often involve the risk of serious or fatal injuries, and workplace safety training programs for these types of jobs should reflect that. Some jobs legally require specialised training from a Registered Training Provider (RTO) including:

  • Working at Heights over 2m
  • Entry and Working in Confined Spaces
  • High-Risk Plant (forklift, cranes, EWPs)
  • General Work in the Construction Industry (White Card / Blue Card)

For tasks that do not require RTO training, internal training should be used to fill the gap. Internal training can involve inductions, group training sessions or verifications of competency (VOC) – all of which can be managed or facilitated by Spire Safety.

Spire Safety can help identify gaps in staff training and competency and provide recommendations or design programs aimed at filling these gaps. The recommendations will either consist of internal training, training by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) or a combination of both.

Effective WHS Training Is Essential In Maintaining A Safe Work Environment

Effective training is essential in maintaining a safe work environment and implementing safe systems of work. Ideally, WHS training should be integrated into the wider training and HR functions. For example, training considerations could include ensuring:

Apprentices and trainees receive adequate WHS training as part of their ongoing development

New staff receive adequate WHS / HSEQ inductions and safe work procedure training as part of their onboarding Supervisors receive training in how to identify hazards and maintain a safe workplace Managers and directors receive training about their legal obligations and how to maintain effective work safety governance and safety culture.

For tasks that do not require RTO training, interval training should be used to fill the gap. Internal training can involve inductions, group training sessions or verifications of competency (VOC) – all of which can be managed or facilitated by Spire Safety. We can design custom-made training to suit any client and any situation. In addition, we offer the following industry WHS training programs:

If you are unsure of your organisation’s WHS requirements in relation to training, the first step is often to conduct a training gap analysis (or training needs analysis). Spire Safety can help identify gaps in staff training and competency and provide recommendations or design programs aimed at filling these gaps.

The recommendations will either consist of internal training, training by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) or a combination of both.
