A certified organisation can still carry process maps that no longer match reality, corrective actions closed without proving they worked, and customer complaints handled outside the system. The certificate stays on the wall while rework, scrap, missed dates and recurring complaints continue.
Stage 2 auditors look for evidence that the system is running: internal audits completed, management review held, quality objectives measured and corrective actions checked for effectiveness. A gap analysis finds those problems while they are still inexpensive to fix.
ISO 9001 is the international standard for quality management systems. The current edition is ISO 9001:2026, published on 16 September 2026. ISO 9001 certification means an accredited certification body has audited your QMS and confirmed that it meets the standard.
A QMS is how an organisation consistently delivers what it promised. You can operate a quality system without certification; certification adds independent verification, which a client, tender or supply chain may require.
Certification bodies accredited by JAS-ANZ issue ISO 9001 certificates in Australia. Consultants, including Spire Safety, can prepare your system, close gaps and conduct internal audits, but cannot make the independent certification decision.

ISO 9001 certification typically takes 4 to 12 months. A mature existing system may move faster, while complex or multi-site organisations can take longer. Timing depends on current gaps, how quickly operating evidence is produced, internal availability and the certification body's audit schedule.
Confirm the certification scope and compare current processes and evidence with clauses 4 to 10.
Agree ownership, controls and measures with the people running each process.
Create only the documented information needed to control and evidence the work.
Generate records, monitor objectives and test supplier and customer outcomes.
Complete the clause 9.2 audit and clause 9.3 review, then close the findings.
The independent certification body reviews readiness at Stage 1 and implementation at Stage 2.
ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026 and replaces ISO 9001:2015. The structure and most requirements carry over, so an effective 2015 system is a strong starting point. The changes that most often need new evidence are:
Existing ISO 9001:2015 certificates remain valid during the transition period, which is expected to run about three years. Confirm your transition audit timing with your certification body. If you are certifying for the first time, build to the 2026 edition now.

This is especially useful for organisations that first certified to safety and are now adding quality for a customer or tender. Existing governance, document control, audit and review processes can be extended rather than rebuilt into one controlled system.
The operational requirements remain specialised. Quality controls customer and process outcomes; safety controls hazards; environment controls aspects and impacts. Integration removes duplication without pretending those outcomes are the same.
