Why integrate ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001?

Three systems make the same business do the same work three times. Separate systems duplicate document control, leadership meetings, objectives, corrective action, audits and management review.

Duplication also creates contradictions: different document numbers, risk methods, action registers and versions for the same team. Integration removes that noise without removing the specialised controls each standard needs. The result is not three manuals in one folder; it is one system designed to satisfy all standards in scope.

What is an integrated management system (IMS)?

An integrated management system (IMS) is one management system that meets the requirements of more than one ISO standard — most often ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environment) and ISO 45001 (health and safety).

Is there an ISO certificate for an integrated management system?

No. There is no standalone IMS certification standard. Organisations are certified to each standard separately, usually through one combined audit by a JAS-ANZ accredited certification body that is accredited for every standard and scope involved.

    Services

Integrated management system services we deliver

    Integrate existing ISO certifications

Consolidate separately certified systems while preserving current certificates, controls and useful operating evidence.

    Build an IMS from scratch

Design one management system for organisations pursuing two or three ISO standards together.

Add ISO 14001 or ISO 45001 to an existing system

Extend the governance, document control and assurance processes already operating in a certified system.

    IMS gap analysis

Map duplication, conflicts, missing requirements and the practical work needed to create one auditable system.

    Integrated internal audits

Audit shared processes once across the standards while testing specialised quality, environmental and safety controls.

    HSEQ / QHSE document consolidation

Retain what works, merge duplicate documents and formally withdraw superseded policies, procedures and registers.

How ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 integrate

The three standards share ISO’s harmonised structure, formerly called Annex SL, so their common governance processes can operate once while specialised controls remain distinct.

How long does IMS implementation take?

Integrating mature existing systems typically takes about two to four months. A new system, several sites or substantial evidence gaps can take longer. Timing depends on the number of standards, current document quality, process alignment, internal availability and how long the consolidated system must operate before its internal and certification audits.

    Typical stages

    Integrated management system implementation timeline

    1. 1

      Integration review · 1–2 weeks

Map existing certifications, documents, processes, evidence, duplication and conflicts across the standards.

    2. 2

      IMS architecture · 1–2 weeks

Agree one hierarchy, naming convention, register set, ownership model and integration boundary.

    3. 3

      Consolidation · 3–5 weeks

Merge useful content, close shared gaps and retire duplicates without disrupting controls already in use.

    4. 4

Operate the IMS · 2–4 weeks

Use the consolidated processes and produce records that demonstrate the integrated system is working.

    5. 5

Integrated audit and review · 1–2 weeks

Complete the internal audit program, management review and corrective actions across the standards.

    6. 6

External audit readiness · 1–2 weeks

Prepare the evidence index, people and certification-body coordination for a combined integrated audit.

    • One controlled document hierarchy
    • Shared risks, opportunities and objectives process
    • Integrated internal audit program and reports
    • Integrated management review pack
    • Document consolidation and retirement register
    • Certification-readiness evidence index

How much does an integrated management system cost?

IMS cost is quoted after an integration review because the work depends on the standards, sites, system maturity, operational complexity, duplicated documents and evidence already available. Consultant support and independent certification-body auditing are separate scopes, so each provider prices its own work.

Cost areaWhat it coversWhat drives the cost
Consultant supportIntegration review, system architecture, document consolidation, implementation, internal audit and readiness support.Existing maturity, standards, sites, conflicting processes, document volume, evidence gaps and support required from your team.
Certification bodyInitial certification, surveillance and recertification audits for each standard in scope.Employees, sites, risk and complexity, accreditation scope, level of integration, audit duration, travel and the body’s fee schedule.

A genuinely integrated system can reduce total certification audit days because IAF MD 11 allows the certification body to account for shared processes when calculating audit duration. The certification body determines and justifies the final reduction; it is not guaranteed by the consultant.

    FAQ

    Integrated management system FAQs

    01Which standards can be integrated?
ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 are the most common HSEQ combination. Their harmonised structure allows shared governance processes while keeping quality, environmental and OH&S operational controls distinct.
02Can existing certified systems be integrated?
Yes. Existing certificates can remain active while documents, audits, corrective actions and management reviews are consolidated between scheduled certification audits.
    03Does integration reduce audit time?
It can. IAF MD 11 allows the certification body to account for the level of integration when calculating audit duration, but the body determines and justifies the final audit time.
04What remains separate in an integrated management system?
Standard-specific operational controls and certificates remain distinct. Quality, environmental and OH&S risks still require competent assessment, controls, measures and evidence inside the shared framework.
05What's the difference between IMS, HSEQ and QHSE?
They commonly describe the same integrated approach. IMS means integrated management system, while HSEQ and QHSE name the health, safety, environment and quality disciplines included; the order does not change the standards or certification requirements.
06Can one certification body audit all three standards?
Yes, if the certification body is accredited for ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 within the required scope. It can coordinate the standards through one integrated audit while issuing standard-specific certificates.
07How long does an integrated management system take?
Integrating mature existing systems typically takes two to four months. A new system, several sites or substantial evidence gaps can take longer.
08How much does an integrated management system cost?
The cost is scope-based and quoted after an integration review. It depends on existing system maturity, standards, sites, workforce, operational complexity, document duplication, evidence gaps and the support your team needs; certification-body fees are quoted separately.
