How to use the free SDS Register

Why every Australian workplace needs an SDS register

An SDS register — sometimes called a hazardous chemicals register — is the controlled list of every chemical used, handled or stored at your workplace, with the current Safety Data Sheet attached to each one. It's the single document a WorkSafe inspector will ask for first, and the one your workers and emergency services rely on when something goes wrong. Without a live register, you can't prove what's on site, who's been exposed, or how to treat them.

    What the law requires

Under regs 344 and 346 of the WHS Regulations, a PCBU must obtain the current SDS for each hazardous chemical, keep an up-to-date SDS register at the workplace, and ensure both the SDS and the register are readily accessible to workers and others who may be exposed.

What to include in your hazardous chemicals register

At a minimum each entry should record the product name, manufacturer or importer, the SDS issue date, and supplier contact details. Many businesses also record where the chemical is stored, the maximum quantity held, and a link or PDF copy of the SDS itself. If you exceed the manifest quantities in Schedule 11 you'll also need a hazardous chemicals manifest — a separate document — but the register is the universal starting point.

How this free SDS register tool works

    Drop a PDF

Drop the SDSs you already have into the upload bin. The tool reads each PDF, extracts the product, manufacturer, issue date and supplier contact, and adds a row to your register. Up to 30 files at a time.

    Snap a chemical label

For anything on the shelf without an SDS, snap a photo of the label. The tool identifies the product, searches the manufacturer's site for the current SDS, and pulls it into your register automatically.

    Save & share

Click Save & share link to mint a private, hosted link that acts as your live SDS register. Your PDFs and entries are stored online so the link always works — share it with workers, contractors, and emergency contacts who need access on site, especially where paper copies are impractical. You can also download a CSV at any time. No login, no email, no account.

Who this SDS register is for

Small Australian businesses that need a real register without paying for an enterprise chemical management platform — trades and subcontractors, site supervisors and HSRs preparing for an audit, school science labs, cleaning and facilities crews, mechanics, hairdressers and beauty salons, and anyone who's just been told by an auditor that their SDS folder is out of date.

Pair it with our free WHS Legal Register to cover the Acts, Regulations and Codes of Practice that sit alongside your chemicals duties, or browse the rest of our free WHS tools.
